Its only a matter of days until HATstock which is being brought to Stockport in partnership with Brain Tumour Research. We caught up with Sara to find out about the history of this campaign and why it matters.
How did Wear A Hat Day develop?
March is brain tumour awareness month and the Wear a Hat Day Campaign which launches on 31st March to coincide with this. ‘Wear a Hat Day’ has developed over the years to become the UK’s premier brain tumour research fundraising event. The campaign is a fun way for our supporters to help raise awareness and funds for Brain Tumour Research by getting creative with everything hat related! We have many schools, businesses and individuals that take part with different events and there are always lots of creative ideas.
What kinds of things do milliners do for WAHD?
We are very lucky to have the support of a number of milliners for the campaign. There have been some very well-known milliners who have designed pin brooches for the campaign each year and these include Piers Atkinson, Stephen Jones, Lock&Co, Vivien Sheriff, Rachel Trevor-Morgan and Philip Treacy. These brooches are sold for £10 each to raise funds for the charity. We also have a presence at London Hat Week who are really supportive of the charity.
What other activities are happening across the region for WAHD?
There are lots of exciting events happening across the North West, we have local schools getting creative and making hats, local businesses asking their employees to wear their hats for the day, and individuals holding events with their family and friends too. We even have some pets that like to wear their hats! We are also working with Hobby Craft stores who are holding ‘Bling up your Hat’ workshops on Saturdays throughout March.
Why did you want to work with Hat Works Museum of Hatting?
We are very excited to be working in partnership with Hat Works Museum of Hatting with the HATstock event on 25th March 2017. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to work together to help raise awareness and funds for the charity during brain tumour awareness month with our ‘Wear a Hat Day’ campaign, whilst at the same time celebrating Stockport’s heritage of millinery and to showcase all of the talented milliners that we have now in the North West.
Who are your millinery heroes and favourite hat wearers?
I am new to the world of hats…However I do love some of the hat designs I have seen by Rachel Trevor-Morgan as I am fascinated by the wonderful use of feathers and flowers in her designs. I enjoy seeing anything creative and marvel at the skills of all the milliners! I think my favourite hat wearer would be Paddington Bear with his brushed felt hat that was given to him by his Uncle Pastuzo!
Anything else you would like people to know?
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. At Brain Tumour Research, we aim to change this. Our mission is to build a network of experts in sustainable brain tumour research.
